Massimiliano Capalbo

“The fences land”: the Massimiliano Capalbo’s heretical Southern Italy

A book that demolishes the ruling system suggesting another one more faithful to the identity of the Southern Italy and to its countless potentialities, this is Massimiliano Capalbo’s volume “La terra dei recinti” (“The fences land”, Rubbettino ed.). Here the fences indicate a system which inhibits the sense of initiative encouraging a dormant state of the soul. Just as it happens to the animals in captivity whose wild spirit is slowed down by the ordinary distribution of food, which contains the hunting instinct.

The most innovative feature of the Capalbo’s book is the idea of a Southern Italy that can save itself. This is an affirmation that runs counter to centuries of in vain self-pity universally called “southern matter”, a process that gave to southern people an alibi for the numbing of their souls, convincing them that they were inevitably out of the prevalent development concepts and that they needed other people’s help to survive. They were wrong also because that support arrived, but it hasn’t had any positive echoes, as the current situation shows. Just these days, in fact, the Svimez report has drawn the distressing portray of a Southern Italy that “risks a permanent underdevelopment” and that didn’t record any recovery, with a negative GDP growth of -9.4% in the period 2001-2014. But Capalbo proposes an “heretical” reading of these official data too and in one of his last speech he said that the crassest mistake committed by all the Governs that tried to impose to Southern Italy development models which have proved failing and bearers of devastation, pollution and criminality, is want to force Southern Italy to be what it isn’t. “Who establishes – Capalbo wonders in front of the Svimez report – which are the criteria to accord with to consider a land poor? What does economic desertification mean? If it means, for example, that industrial complex as the Ilva in Taranto, the Pertusola in Crotone or the Italsider of Bagnoli (to cite the most well-known ones) will never find a place in Southern Italy areas, I welcome the industrial desertification. What does growth mean? If it means to consume indefinitely to produce the tones of waste that are submerging and polluting our lands, it’s better to stop this growth”.

But which are the growth and development criteria? Does it exist some universally valid? In this book the “revelation” is the motivation to an alternative system of development, far from the current political concepts and based on the actual exploitation of the countless (human, historical, naturalistic, cultural, agricultural, landscaping, artisanal, etc) resources of the territory. A real system, which the action of those who made it has already been based on. “Erethical” entrepreneurs cited in the book, who went beyond the common way of thinking and believed firmly in the worth of their ideas enough to risk to actualize them. Basically, the author thinks that the only way to help Southern Italy, is just let it alone, free to decide on its own form of growth and development, consistently with its own matters.

An enthusiasm like this must be based first of all on the acknowledgement of our land worth and of its enormous potentialities. Then the author thinks that one must take responsibility for one’s choices and expose oneself to actualize them. Finally, these enterprising souls must stimulate the collectivity and above all those who would like to act, but are still slowed by various reasons. That’s the “recipe” to save the South suggested by Massimiliano Capalbo, a young entrepreneur that took his chances and realized his ideas, believing in his “herethical” enterprise, “Orme nel Parco” (Footprints in the park) an adventure park in the middle of the Sila mountains. He is not alone. Also other personalities are on the same path. They are (let me mention just a few ) Rosario Benedetto, a thirty-years-old from Varese who moved to Calabria, in Roseto Capo Spulico to plant his roses or Stefano Caccavari that gave to hundreds of families the possibility to eat healthy, with his “family field” in San Floro, contributing to avoid the construction of a landfill site nearby.

So this “recipe” is perfectly feasible, as the facts show. Now we only have to start working and pull the trigger on a revival process of our south!
